PSS Visits with McKesson in Atlanta

PSS recently had the chance to attend the McKesson's Lytec VAR summit in Atlanta Georgia. This annual event allows us to stay current on not just the direction of your Lytec program and what has been added to the new version, but also allows us to keep up to date on upcoming legislation, as well as the trends and changes happening with medical billing.

Lytec Technician of the Year AwardDuring the event, PSS received the Lytec Technician of the Year award for our dedication to creating customized solutions to meet and exceed the needs of Lytec users, and the Reseller community. It was a huge honor to be recognized for our hard work and dedication to making Lytec the best it can be, by our peers in the reseller community.

This year’s event was extremely informative as we have several major changes to the industry coming down the pipeline from washington. PSS is poised to help guide you through the changes with ANSI 5010, ICD10, and the economic stimulus package (ARRA). In addition to learning about Lytec 2010 and the upcoming industry changes, we were given more insight into the direction McKesson is taking Lytec, LytecMD and Bright Note technology. One of the biggest things to come from Lytec this year is Lytec’s exciting new software assurance program which lets you be prepared today for changes you will face in the next three to five years, and save thousands.

In all, we are very excited about the directions McKesson is taking Lytec and LytecMD. We have already published an in depth article on Lytec 2010, and are the first to offer you this in depth look. Be on the lookout for the best information on the economic stimulus plan (ARRA), ICD10, and much more in the future. Stay tuned to our newsletters to stay informed, and tell your friends about this newsletter, so that they may be prepared as well.

Lytec 2010, Faster, Better Looking, More Affordable*

Mckesson just announced (as of October 20th, 2009) Lytec 2010, and we here at Physicians Software Solutions wanted to be the first to tell you about it. We have written an in depth review of Lytec 2010, which you can view here, but for this newsletter, we wanted to bring you a few highlights.

Faster
The biggest complaint we get from seasoned Lytec veterans since Lytec 2006 was released is the speed of the system (or lack thereof). The truth is, when Lytec went from the Pervasive database engine to Microsoft SQL, things slowed down. This was due in large to the fact that the program had, for many years, been fine-tuned for the pervasive engine, and those steps which made it fast for pervasive, made it slow for Microsoft SQL. Lytec making the switch to SQL helped improve the stability of the program, but still needed to spend the time rerewriting the program for SQL.

Now that Lytec is owned by McKesson, they have the resources to address that nagging issue of speed. And address it they have. Some areas of the program are 40% faster, while others are 100% faster, such as charges and payments. The appointment screen is ten times faster (what used to take 10 seconds, now takes 1).

Prettier
Lytec 2010 has had a bit of a face lift, and it looks great, with improved and efficient new menus that take workflow into account. This makes the program easier to navigate, and makes your office more efficient.

More affordable
McKesson has introduced Lytec 2010 with some of the biggest discounts we have ever seen, designed to encourage quick adoption of the new program. If you pre-order prior to November 20th, you save up to 25% off the retail price of Lytec 2010. Orders placed before December 11th will save up to 20%, and orders placed prior to December 28th will save 15% off.

Conclusion
Lytec 2010 has some major improvements on issues we have wanted addressed for some time. The look and feel has been updated, and serious speed improvements have been accomplished. Those were two very major issues, so not a lot of the smaller requests made it into this release. Those who have Lytec 2009, and who aren’t fast data entry users, may not see the need to upgrade as much as those who are using older versions, or those who have been affected by the speed issues. However we are recommending that all practices seriously look at upgrading your Lytec to 2010 and take advantage of the pricing assurance to guarantee you stay up to date for the major changes coming to the industry. Preorder your copy soon so that you can take advantage of the discounted pricing.

Windows 7 Officially Released

On October 22nd, 2009, Microsoft officially released the Windows 7 operating system. Lytec and Validator clients who were warned away from Windows Vista may be tempted to pick up this exciting new operating system from Microsoft.

windows 7

While initial PSS testing is promising, and we really do like this new operating system, it is important to remember that when it comes to your business and your livelihood, it is highly inadvisable to be the first guy on the block with a new operating system. There are several reasons for this. First, there may be as yet unknown bugs with the operating system which could result in very unwelcome downtime with your practice management system. Further, any version of Lytec from 2009 prior will not be officially supported by McKesson. This means if there is a problem with your Lytec which PSS cannot solve, you will not get a resolution to the problem if the operating system your Lytec is running on is Windows 7 (no matter how implausible it is that the problem could be the operating system).

With all of that said, PSS has done some independent testing with an early release Windows 7 operating system. With Pervasive based systems like Lytec 2001 and 2005 (ironically), Lytec installs and runs fairly problem free on Windows 7. With newer systems like Lytec 2008 or 2009, a small patch should be run. With Lytec 2006 and 2007, the database engine (SQL 2000) is not supported on Windows 7, and should not be run. After our tests with Validator 5, we have discovered that even with heavy modifications to the default installation, you will not be able to run Validator 5 in Windows 7. PSS is busy developing a new Windows 7 compliant version of Validator, which we expect to be released in the first quarter of 2010.
